“One girl in class said her favorite day of the week was Thursday because that was cooking day!”
Healthy Eating in Communities Partner Story:
Weekly healthy cooking class: "That is GOOD!"
Thanks to a Live Well Goodhue County mini-grant, the kids and moms at HOPE Coalition’s domestic violence shelter enjoyed a weekly healthy cooking class led by our wonderful volunteer, Janet Gelhar (pictured). They made enchiladas, fruit parfaits, muffins, and pizza, among other things. Everyone loved the class and Janet shared some delightful moments!
“When we made deviled eggs, one boy was so excited. He said his grandma made those for him. He was apprehensive about using spicy brown mustard, but after a small taste, his eyes lit up. “That is good!” he said, adding it to his mixture and eating it with a broad smile.”
“One week we made bread in a bag. While the dough rose, we shook cream into butter. The kids were fascinated as they watched it whip up, and lumps appear and eventually, adhere. We ate the butter on the fresh bread. The entire kitchen smelled wonderful!”
“One kindergarten aged girl was hesitant to try the green pepper. I cut a tiny piece for her to try. She was shocked to discover it tasted good, and added a pile to her plate.”
