Adopt A Highway

What is Adopt-A-Highway?

Adopt-A-Highway is a public service program for volunteers to pick up litter and debris along Minnesota’s roadways. It is a way for citizens to make a personal contribution to a cleaner environment.

Here’s how it works!
Adopt a Highway groups agree to:

  • Adopt a two mile segment of highway for a minimum of two years.
  • Pick up litter and debris along this segment twice each year.
  • Wear safety vests during pick-up and observe all safety rules.
  • Contact the Goodhue County Public Works Department to collect the trash.

Goodhue County Public Works agree to:

  • Erect a highway sign to recognize your group’s cleanup efforts.
  • Provide high visibility vests, trash bags and safety information.
  • Remove filled bags from the roadside and remove large, heavy or hazardous items.

How do I sign up?

If you desire to participate in the Adopt-A-Highway Program, please fill out the application form and return it to Goodhue County Public Works, P.O. Box 404, Red Wing, MN 55066. We will be happy to help you select a segment of county highway to adopt, provide you with safety information and answer any other questions you may have. Our phone number is 651-385-3025.

Why should I care?

  • Litter is unsightly. It destroys the natural beauty of Goodhue County’s roadsides.
  • Litter is expensive. GCPW employees pick up the roadsides that are not adopted by volunteers.
  • Scenic and litter-free roadsides say “welcome” to visitors and make us proud to be citizen’s of Goodhue County!
