Mental Health Services

What is Mental Illness?
Mental illnesses are biochemical brain disorders that affect a person’s thinking and emotions, and may impact their ability to manage life on a day-to-day basis.  Common mental health diagnoses include depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and anxiety disorders.  People of any age, race, or gender can be affected by mental illness.  For more information on mental illness, please visit the links listed below. 

Can Mental Illness Be Treated?
Yes, mental illness can be treated through a variety of methods.  Many people need a combination of psychiatry services (medication management), therapy, and rehabilitative/supportive services to successfully manage their illness. 

Who Does Goodhue County Serve:
Goodhue County Mental Health Center is licensed by the Minnesota Department of Human Services as a Community Mental Health Center.  Services are provided for seniors, adults, adolescents, and children. 

Fees
Goodhue County Mental Health Center accepts most private insurance plans and Medical Assistance payments.  Services are provided under a sliding fee schedule. 

Outpatient Services
The Goodhue County Mental Health Center staff is composed of experienced mental health professionals offering a wide-range of services to meet client needs. Staff includes clinical social workers, psychologists, a psychiatrist, nurse, and mental health outreach workers.  

Outpatient Services include:

  • Individual, couple, family, and child therapy,
  • Psychological evaluations, testing and assessment for adults and children,
  • Parenting evaluations,
  • Psychiatric consultation and medication management,
  • Substance abuse evaluations and treatment referral,
  • Crisis assistance,
  • Information and referral,
  • Case/Program consultation,
  • DWI Clinic,
  • Adult/Adolescent Anger Management classes,
  • Domestic Abuse Treatment Program,
  • Community Support Program services

Crisis Services
Goodhue County provides crisis assistance and referrals to crisis facilities.  Mental Health Center staff may be contacted at 651-385-6180 or 1-800-657-4941.  During night-time hours or weekends, crisis calls will be received at 1-800-422-0670.  For emergency situations, phone 9-1-1. 

Pre-Petition Screening
Goodhue County screens all individuals who are being petitioned for civil commitment, a process by which the Court determines that an individual’s mental illness or chemical dependence is causing them to be a danger to themselves or others.  Individuals who are placed under civil commitment may be treated in a community or regional hospital, or receive intensive community-based care during this time of acute need.

Case Management
Case Management services are provided for adults with a serious and persistent mental illness.  Goodhue County provides direct and contracted case management services, based on the needs of the consumer.  Case Management services may be requested by calling 651-385-3232.

Community Support Services
Community Support Services, which include outreach, crisis assistance, medication monitoring, benefits assistance, assistance in independent living skills, psychosocial rehabilitation, education, employability and housing support are available through Goodhue County.  For information, call 651-385-3457.
