Goodhue County Building Permits and Inspections

Minnesota State Building Code

The Minnesota State Building Code has applied to all of Goodhue County since 1979.  The Goodhue County Building Official and staff administer the building code in all 21 unincorporated townships and by joint-powers agreements in some of the municipalities.

The building code applies to the construction, alteration, moving, demolition, repair, and use of any building, structure, or building service equipment.  The purpose of the building code is to provide minimum standards to safeguard life and limb, health, property, and public welfare.  The minimum code standards are achieved by regulating and controlling the design, construction, quality of materials, use and occupancy, location, and maintenance of structures and equipment.

The building official must maintain certification through the state and has duties, powers, and responsibilities established by state statute.  The building official receives permit applications, reviews construction documents, issues building permits, conducts project inspections, and authorizes use and occupancy of structures.

Building Permits
Building permits are required for work that is covered by the scope of the code. Fee free to contact County Building Staff with questions on specific projects. See a list of some examples of projects that typically require permits.
