Sheriff's Citizen Academy
The Goodhue County Sheriff’s Office has found that education is one of the most effective ways of gaining understanding and support from the community. The Sheriff’s Citizens Academy offers citizens insight into how deputies perform their duties and how the department serves the community.
The Academy creates a nucleus of well-informed citizens who possess greater insight into law enforcement practices and services. This knowledge can dispel common suspicions, misconceptions and increase police-community cooperation. It allows the citizens to be able to make informed judgments about the Sheriff’s Office and the entire criminal justice system. In return deputies become more aware of the feelings and concerns of the community from the citizens. Graduates of the Academy can share their knowledge and experiences with the community as the opportunity arises. Everyone benefits from enhancing citizen understanding of the role and function of the Sheriff’s Office.
Once a year the Goodhue County Sheriff’s Office hosts a Citizens Academy, which is free of charge to attendees. The academy has been expanded to include a variety of members from all areas of the criminal justice system. The Academy is open to any person that is eighteen years of age or older, has no prior felony convictions and is a resident of Goodhue County.
